In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew made landfall just south of the North Carolina border with South Carolina. Heavy rain, wind and substantial flooding caused significant damage across a wide area of the state. The town of Lumberton was completely flooded. Hundreds of people were trapped and had to be rescued. Dozens of areas were made inaccessible due to flooded roads and inundated bridges. Damages were estimated at more than $2.4 billion dollars, with $400 million in the agriculture sector and hundreds of millions attributed to other area businesses.
The businesses that had an emergency plan in place were able to reopen sooner because they knew just what to do when the storm cleared out. Their losses were devastating, but their responsiveness was on point.
